Resumen
Introducción: los trastornos de sueño son frecuentes en los pacientes con dolor crónico; existen muchos estudios clínicos que ponen en evidencia la relación directa que existe entre estas dos patologías. Esta revisión narrativa de la literatura tiene como objetivo realizar una descripción breve de los principales conceptos relacionados al insomnio y el dolor crónico, así como la relación entre ambos. Metodología: estudio de revisión de la bibliografía de artículos científicos publicados en bases de datos: PubMed, EBSCO, Scopus y Medline. Resultados: existe una relación directa entre el insomnio y el dolor crónico, demostrada por múltiples estudios clínicos. Los problemas del sueño se asocian con empeoramiento en la percepción del dolor e incluso son considerados un factor de mal pronóstico. Conclusiones: para los profesionales de salud, especialmente los que desarrollan su práctica clínica es unidades de Cuidados Paliativos y/o tratamiento de dolor es fundamental conocer los conceptos básicos que permiten una adecuada evaluación y terapéutica de los problemas del dormir, en particular el insomnio.
